Accessibility

This gets used one-handed, walking round an empty home, sometimes in poor light and sometimes with a phone that is nearly out of battery. That has shaped how it is built.

What we aim at

This site is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at level AA. It is checked as part of the build, not audited at the end.

Contrast, measured

In plain wordsBody text is 14.18:1. Every coloured label clears 4.5:1. Nothing depends on colour alone.

The palette is eight fixed colours, and the ratios against the page background were measured rather than estimated:

Body text: 14.18:1

The wide-shot label: 5.71:1
The close-shot label: 5.11:1
The scale-object label: 4.84:1
The often-missed label: 4.94:1

Colour is never the only signal. Every kind of item also carries a label in words and its own frame style — solid, dashed, doubled or dotted — so the distinction survives being printed in black and white, or read by somebody who does not see the difference between two of the colours.

There is no red anywhere on this site, and no marker for a problem of any kind.

Keyboard, and screen readers

In plain wordsEverything works from the keyboard, with a visible focus outline. Nothing is carried by a picture alone.

Every control can be reached and used from the keyboard, in a sensible order.
The focus outline is a solid two-pixel rule and is never removed.
There is a skip link to the main content as the first thing on every page.
Every drawing has a text alternative, and every drawing that carries information is also written out in words beside it.
Headings run in order, and landmarks are marked up so a screen reader can jump between them.

Motion

In plain wordsThe one animation on the site respects your system setting. With reduced motion on, the line is simply already drawn.

The callout line on the front page draws itself once. If your system is set to reduce motion, it is drawn already when the page loads — you see the finished picture rather than nothing at all. The same applies to the loading state inside the tool.

Nothing on this site moves on its own, flashes, or scrolls by itself.

Using it on a phone, in a real home

In plain wordsOne place per screen, big targets, works offline, and it is still there when you come back.

One place per screen in the list, so you are never scrolling while holding something.
Every tap target is at least 56 pixels on its shortest side.
Once the list has loaded it keeps working without a connection.
Where you got to is kept in the browser, so closing it and coming back does not lose your place.
Text scales with your browser's own text size setting, up to 200%, without anything being cut off.

Plain text, and paper

In plain wordsEvery list has a plain-text version you can copy, and a print layout that is a real output rather than a screenshot.

Every list has a plain-text version: no layout, no colour, no graphics, just the words in order. It can be copied into anything at all — a notes app, an email to yourself, a text file.

The print layout is a first-class output, not an afterthought. It drops the navigation, prints in black on white, keeps each place on one piece of paper where it can, and writes out the address behind every link. Paper does not need a battery, and an empty flat is often somewhere with no signal.
